ALICE M. BLAAUW ADMINISTRATOR Alice M. Blaauw, 79, of Mellenville, passed away Friday, May 9, 2014 at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany. Born on October 26, 1934 in Jamaica, Queens, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Alice Sharp. Alice graduated from Sewanhaka High School in Floral Park, NY, Class of 1952, where she was a member of the National Honor Society. She also performed with the Rockettes in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Alice graduated from the Brooklyn Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in 1955. She worked at the Mineola Hospital, Sharon Hospital in Connecticut, and Columbia Memorial Hospital. In 1960, she went to work as a part time nurse at Pine Haven Nursing Home and then went full time. Alice moved up to Director of Nursing and then was appointed Administrator of Pine Haven. As Administrator she oversaw construction of the new Pine Haven Nursing Home 80 bed facility and eventually the addition of 40 more beds. Alice served as Administrator for 20 years before retiring in 1995. She was a life member, and treasurer, of the Philmont Volunteer Fire Company Auxiliary, a member of the Eastern Star, and a member of the Philmont United Methodist Church. Alice is survived by her husband of 57 years, William "Bill" Blaauw; three sons, Robert (Mary Jane) of Averill Park, James of Topeka, Kansas, and John of Philmont; five grandchildren, Robert (Carla), Erica, Andrea, McKenzie, and Calista; and five great-grandchildren, Cameron, Madelyn, Tessa, Cody, and Georgianna. Also surviving are two sisters, Elsie (Laddie) Crisp and Barbara Gonzales, and several nieces and nephews. Visiting hours are 4-8 pm Tuesday at the Bates & Anderson - Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home. Services will be conducted at 1 pm Wednesday at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Mellenville Union Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society for breast cancer research.
