Joel George Hollenbeck, age 82, of Greenport, passed away on Saturday, March 26, 2016 at his residence with his family by his side. Joel was born August 18, 1933 in Ghent (Omi) to the late Elizabeth (Betty) Wassie Hollenbeck and William Joel Hollenbeck. His father died when he was 1 and1/2 years old. He was reared by his Mom Betty, Grandmother Wassie, and Aunts, Julia, Anna, Helen, Mary, and Margaret. At age 13, his Mom married the late Anthony (Jake) Pyndus. He graduated from Hudson High in 1951. While there he was involved in soccer and baseball. At 18 Joel entered the US Navy from 1951-1954 and remained in California for a period of time. Joel married the love of his life 57 years ago, Gloria (Bartholomew) Hollenbeck. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Jolene Turrone (Sam Zeoli) of Croton, two sons, Steven (Peg) of Utica, and Kenneth (Melanie) of Hudson; his ex-daughter-in-law, Jean Marzahl Hollenbeck of Hudson, and four grandchildren, Robert (Jennifer) Turrone of Marysville, Washington, Shane (Jessica) Turrone of Newburg, NY, Korin (Dave) Miller of Hudson, and Hailey Hollenbeck of Michigan. Also surviving are three great-grandchildren, Brooke and Robbie Turrone of Washington and Miranda Grace Miller (Cameron Metler) of Hudson; two step-grandchildren, Dustin and Bryan (Amanda) Briggs, and three step-great-grandchildren, Ella, Lincoln, and Liam Briggs. Joel worked very hard maintaining more than one job. He was a Police Officer and Juvenile Aid Officer with the Hudson Police Department from 1963 to 1987 and then drove a school bus for Donald Kline for 29 years and his wife was his aide for 14 years. He also was a sexton at the First Reformed Church for many years. Joel is a life member of the VFW, the American Legion, and a member of Hudson Widow's Son #7 Free Accepted Masons. Visiting time will be 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm Tuesday at the Bates & Anderson - Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 6:00 pm Tuesday at Trinity United Methodist Church in Greenport.
