Lois Hahn Longtime teacher Lois Hahn, 90, of Claverack, passed away Sunday, June 16, 2013, at Pine Haven Nursing Home in Philmont, where she had been in the care of the Community Hospice of Columbia-Greene. Born July 23, 1922 in Rochester, she was the daughter of the late Emma Van Burke and Louis Hahn. She was educated in Syracuse and in 1945 received her Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Wheelock College in Boston, Mass. She moved to this area in 1949. Miss Hahn was a kindergarten and pre-kindergarten teacher with the Hudson School District for more than 30 years. She taught at the Allen Street, Charles Williams and John L. Edwards schools before retiring in the late 1970's. She was the only remaining charter member of the Alpha Nu Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International, an organization of women educators, where she was an active and proud member for 54 years. Miss Hahn also was a member of the Columbia County Retired Teachers Union, New York State Teachers Retirement Union, the Hudson Fortnightly Club, the Adult Learning Institute at Columbia Greene Community College, and a life member of the Greenport Historical Society. She was a member of Christ Church Episcopal in Hudson where she attended the Healing Service, was active with Helping Hands and served on the Vestry for many years. Miss Hahn loved traveling with friends and visited many European countries. She was predeceased by her close friend, Kathryn L. Parker. Services will be conducted Thursday, June 20, at Christ Church Episcopal, 431 Union St., Hudson. Friends may call from 10 - 11 a.m., with a memorial service beginning at 11.
