ROBERT J. MOSELEY COMMUNITY LEADER Robert J. Moseley, 81, of Claverack, passed away Thursday, August 16, 2012 at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, with his loving family by his side. Born February 11, 1931 in Kingston, NY, he was the son of the late William and Mary (Pospisil) Moseley. Bob graduated from Philmont High School in 1950, where he was the vice-president of Columbia County Student Council and co-captain of the Philmont High School Columbia County Basketball Team in 1950. He also played baseball in high school and in the Columbia County Twi-Light League. He married his high school sweetheart, Pat Montague, on November 26, 1950. Robert was a sergeant in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. Upon his discharge from the Marine Corps, he was employed by the V & O Press Co., Inc. in Hudson, NY, a machine tool industry. He held various positions throughout the years and was vice-president of manufacturing until 1988. He served as Deputy Administrative Officer for Columbia County and a consultant for the special needs pre-school children until he retired. Robert was elected and served as Supervisor for the Town of Claverack and member of the Columbia County Board of Supervisors for 6 years including time as Minority Leader. He was elected and served as Town of Claverack Councilman for 16 years. He was a member of the original Town Park Committee and served on the town youth commission. He received a life membership from Minkler-Seery Post #252 in Philmont and had 60 years continuous membership. He served as Commander, Treasurer, Membership Chairman and several other committees. He took an active part in the Village of Philmont Memorial Day services for many years, serving as Chair and Co-Chair of the program and the parade, master of ceremonies and main speaker. Bob served as chair of the Columbia County Convention and on the county's Resolution Committee. He has received membership awards and the American Legion Citation of Appreciation for Outstanding Service. He served as Co-Chair with Mrs. Loletia Montague to raise funds for a war memorial for all wars which was unveiled in the Philmont Village Park on Memorial Day 1976. Bob was a life member and past president of the Mellenville Fire Department and served 8 years as Fire Commissioner. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Church in Philmont and served as Chairman of the original Parish Council. He was Chairman of the Sacred Heart Centennial Celebration held November 1982. Bob also had served on the Sacred Heart Diocese Development Program and as chairman of the annual BBQ for 5 years. For the Ockawamick and Taconic Hills Central School District, he served for 8 years as a member of the Board of Education and also as vice -president. He was on the educational committee for VO-TEC of Columbia and Greene Counties. Bob was a member of the Rotary Club of Philmont with years of perfect attendance. He is a past president and a Paul Harris member. He served as co-chairperson of the 1983 and the 1989 Philmont Rescue Squad Ambulance Fund drives. He served on the board of directors and was Program Chairman of the 911 Community Memorial Services held on both September 11, 2003 and September 11, 2011 that was sponsored by the Rotary Club. Robert was a member of the Columbia County Catholic Family and Community Services established in 1977 and was a member of the original board. He served for 8 years as a board member and also served as president. Bob served for 12 years as chairman of the Columbia County American Cancer Crusade. He was also a member of the Columbia County American Cancer Society Board of Directors and served as president and County Crusade chairman and raised over 1 million dollars. He received the first Thomas Schriver Award in 1976 from the Columbia County American Cancer Society for dedication and volunteer services. He also received the American Cancer Society "Distinguished Crusade Volunteer of the Year award" from the NY State Division on October 20, 1989. The NY State American Cancer Society Public Information Committee also gave him an award on September 29, 1986. He was appointed to a committee on November 21, 1979 by the Chairman of the Columbia County Board of Supervisors to study the feasibility of establishing a youth bureau in Columbia County. In June of 1980 the committee presented its findings to the board of supervisors, and from this the youth board was formed. Bob was appointed to the youth board and served 8 years as a board member and the last 3 years a chairman. He received the "Bill Bud" award on October 28, 1998 for serving the youth of Columbia County and NY State from the association of NYS youth bureaus. From the Greater Philmont Mellenville Area Jaycees, he received the Outstanding Man of the Year Award in 1982 for "Distinguished and Unselfish Services given to the Community". Bob received many other awards including the Claverack Lions 1980 Citizen of the Year and the 1986 Columbia County Volunteer of the year. Bob is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Patricia (Montague) Moseley; his devoted daughter and son-in-law, Roberta Moseley Nero and James Nero; two grandsons, Joseph Nero, and his wife, Lisa, and James Nero, and his wife, Jessica; a great-granddaughter, Samantha Nero; his sister, Bernice Hawver, his brother, Frank Moseley, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, William and Jack Moseley, and a sister, Jean Cole. Visiting hours are 1-5 pm Sunday at the Bates & Anderson - Redmond & Keeler Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 am Monday at the Church of St. Joseph's in Stuyvesant Falls. Interment will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Philmont. Memorial donations may be made to the Columbia Greene Humane Society, 125 Humane Society Road, Hudson, NY, 12534 or to a charity of choice.
