Henry M. Greenhouse

Henry M. Greenhouse Papermaker; Assessor Greenport-Henry M. "Hank" Greenhouse, 79, of Green Acres Rd, died July 10, 2013, at Columbia Memorial Hospital. Born in New York City on June 26, 1934, he was the son of the late Ruth Greenhouse, and the late Bernard D. Greenhouse. He graduated from Harrison High School, Harrison, NY, in 1951, and from SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse University in 1955, with a BS degree in Paper Science and Engineering. He served in the U.S. Army Chemical Corps from 1957-1959 under the Scientific and Professional Personnel program, working in the Chemical Warfare Labs in Edgewood, MD on the development of media used in the filter elements of the Field Protective Mask. He was employed by the former Columbia Corporation in Chatham, NY, from 1955 until his retirement in 1991. During this 36 year period he served as Director of Research amd Development and Technical Director. He was responsible for the development of several new products which were commercialized by the Company, for the Quality Control program, and for all technical aspects of the papermaking process. He was instrumental in the design and operation of the effluent treatment plant at the Chatham Mill, one of the first biological secondary treatment plants serving the paper industry in New York State. He represented the company as a member of the northeast regional meeting planning committee of the National Council for Air and Stream Improvement, and delivered several papers on various aspects of wastewater treatment in the paperboard industry at its meetings. He was a New York State Certified Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator, Grade 3A; a Retired Member of the Technical Association of The Pulp and Paper Industry (TAPPI); a Life Member of the Paper Industry Management Association (PIMA). Folowing his retirement he pursued another field of interest, earning 27 credit hours from Columbia-Greene Community College in Computer Science. In the Town of Greenport election of 1997 he was elected to the Board of Assessors for a 4 year term. In 2001 he was appointed to the position of Sole Assessor, for a term of 6 years. He had served the Town of Greenport earlier as a member of the Planning Board for ten years, and as its Chariman for several. He had been the Supervising Operator of the town's wastewater treatment plant when biological secondary treatment was initiated. He was a New York State Certified Assessor, Advanced. In 2006 he retired from the Town of Greenport Assessor position. In September 2007 he was appointed Sole Assessor for the Town of Clermont, Columbia County for a term of 6 years. He had been a member and Vice-President of the Hudson Jaycees; a 23 year member and Vice-President of the Board of Directors of the Hudson Boys' and Girls' Club; Treasurer of The Stockport Little League; President of The Columbia Box Board Federal Credit Union. He was a life member of Congregation Anshe Emeth and served two 3-year terms as a member of its Board of Directors. He loved classical music, the New York Giants, his Macintosh computer, and his family. He is predeceased by his beloved wife of 52 years, Elaine Greenhouse. He is survived by his beloved sons, Michael of Greenport and Kenneth (Brooke) of East Greenbush, and his brother, Dr. Jeff (Judy) Greenhouse of Oakland, CA. Graveside services will be conducted at 1:30 pm Sunday at Cedar Park Cemetery.
