Elinor A. Zegers, 92, of Hudson, was united with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on September 17, 2014. Elinor was born in Jamaica, Long Island, New York on January 10, 1922. She was one of two children born to John T. Krause and Viola (Hunkin) Krause. She was the loving wife of Francis D. Zegers and mother of James J. Zegers (Phyllis), Richard J. Zegers (Marion) and Clair M. Gallager (John). In her younger years Elinor was active in the Girl Scouts, earning the Golden Eaglet which was the highest award given at that time. After graduating from Our Lady of Wisdom High School, Elinor attended Hunter College in NY, where she earned a degree in psychology. She gathered annually for more than 50 years with members of her Hunter College graduating class. Elinor and Frank married on May 4, 1946 and lived to celebrate their 68th anniversary. While raising her three children, she was very involved in her parish church and school often volunteering for whatever was needed. Among other activities, she was also a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts and President of the Altar Rosary Society in Presentation Parish. Many nights and weekends were spent working at Gertz Department Store. After retirement the Zegers' spent 24 years in Holiday City Adult Community in Toms River, New Jersey. Serving was also a passion there, especially making baby sweaters for families in the US Navy and bringing communion to disabled neighbors. For years she and her husband worked bingo for Holiday City Community Center and faithfully counted the collections baskets after Mass each Sunday. From Toms River they moved to Avila Independent Living Facility in Albany, NY, and finally the Firemen's Home in Hudson, NY. Besides her husband and children, survivors include her grandchildren, Kevin (Nicole) and Brian Gallagher and Theo Zegers, two great-grandchildren that she was very proud of, Penelope and Dean Gallager, and her sister and brother-in-law, Marjorie and Ed Zeno of Cincinnati, Ohio. Relatives and friends may gather at the Firemen's Home, 125 Harry Howard Avenue, Hudson, NY, from 10 to 11 am on Saturday, September 20, 2014. Father Winston Bath will offer a Mass of Resurrection at 11 am Saturday in the Firemen's Home Chapel. Interment will be in the Firemen's Home Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Elinor A. Zegers to the Firemen's Home. Thank you all for your prayers and support.
