Hudson - Francis D. Zegers, 95, was united with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on January 9th, 2016. Frank was born in Jamaica, Long Island, on April 7th, 1920. He was the sixth of ten children born to Charles T. and Catherine (Durney) Zegers. He was the loving father of James J. Zegers (Phyllis), Richard J. Zegers (Marion) and Clair M. Gallagher (John), devoted grandfather of Kevin (Nicole) and Brian (Jen) Gallagher and Theo Zegers, and so proud of his two great-grandchildren, Penelope and Dean Gallagher. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Elinor (Krause) Zegers, and nine brothers and sisters. After graduating from Loughlin High School, Frank attended St. Francis College and worked for the State of New York for 38 years. After retirement the Zegers' spent 24 years in Holiday City Adult Community in Tom's River, New Jersey before moving to Avila Independent Living Facility in Albany, and finally the Firemen's Home in Hudson. He was one of six members of the family to serve in World War II. Having been wounded in the South Pacific, he received the Purple Heart for his bravery. Frank was a nature lover, enjoyed camping and gardening. Neighbors and family were happy to reap the benefits of his green thumb. He was a baseball coach, scout master, swimming coach and quick to volunteer for community and church needs. Relatives and friends may gather at the Firemen's Home, 125 Harry Howard Avenue, Hudson, NY 12534, from 9:30 am to 11 am on Saturday, January 16th, 2016. Fr. Gary Gelfenbien, a longtime friend, will offer a Mass of Resurrection at 11 am in the Firemen's Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Firemen's Home Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Francis D. Zegers to the Firemen's Home. Thank you one and all for your prayers and sacrificies.
